School Story:
Doc Walton's fetal pigs, you Skunkettes. Mrs. Barnes allowing us to skip class to get her Krispy Kremes and her wonderful birthday parties. An ice storm in Southwest Atlanta during a '68 basketball game after which Angela Thompson's car skidded off the road and 6 (or more) very frightened cheerleaders sought refuge at a stranger's home and found guardian angels (an invalid man and his daughter) who opened their home, their hearts, and refrigerator to us. Interviewing Lester Maddox for Mrs. Spears class and rushing with Angela and Tootsie to her apt. to tell her about it. She was a great lady and teacher. Laughing like crazy at Mr. Draa's murdering the English language and Mr. Hilderbrand's aroma.
My first attempt at being a juvenile delinquent was sneaking out with the family car for a joy ride when I was 15, picking up Pat Winters and Marianna Hills and I think we went to the Jr Varsity. Boy did I breathe a sigh of relief when I got the car home in one piece.
I never did quite get the French in Mrs. Golson's class. In Paris once I could ask where the toilet was, but I did not understand the answer. And all I could ask for was ham and eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Enjoyed trying to replace Hinkle's column in the Southerner with the help of Marilyn Benbenisty. Never could do him justice though.
Remember great after-football game parties at Arva's house. What great parents she had!
Remember having great fun with Roy and Connie, Rodney and Cathy, Tootsie and Tony, Susan and Bill. Great picnics, horseback riding, stealing firewood from Roy's neighbors for our campfires (another attempt at juvenile delinquency but only Roy got caught).
Remember getting a traffic ticket for allowing my 14-year-old sister to drive while my parents were out of town. Susan Enloe got her grandfather (a sheriff I think) to go light on me - haha. I thought I'd get a slap on the hand - he made me go to traffic school for weeks and I made Susan go with me for HER punishment.
One of the best things that happened to me at Grady was meeting Joyce Blair in Doc Walton's class and sharing a fetal pig with her. To this day she and Bill Reese are my very best friends. They have shared their children with me (and they are great kids) and now their grandchildren. Little Jacob looks just like Bill!!!!!!
